There are so many celebrations and festivities in March from International Women’s Day to St. Patrick’s Day and Easter, but one in particular impacts the environment and helps the whole world.
Earth Hour is this Saturday March 19 between 8:30 PM and 9:30 PM in your local time-zone!
As a person that always has to be plugged in, use this moment to relax and unwind. Instead of letting you go cold turkey, here are a few things to do before, during, and after the hour.
1 hour before:
Charge your devices
Make sure your devices are fully charged, but unplug unused chargers from wall outlets to minimize phantom charge. Even though they draw very little energy, in the long run, every little bit helps.
Buy candles and matches
Buy some candles and matches to create a cool ambiance in your home so you have no excuse not to power down.
30 minutes before:
Schedule your tweets
If you must be active during the hour, schedule your posts or tweets beforehand. Yes, it’s not as authentic, but your followers will understand that you’re participating in a great initiative.
15 minutes before:
Pre-Earth Hour Engagement
If you need to engage live with your audience, post or tweet 15 minutes before the hour. You can leverage excitement by counting down and engaging in short and sweet conversations. Then, hunker down and disconnect.
During the hour:
Turn off your lights!
At a minimum, light the candles you just purchased and turn off the lights.
Play phone stack
Remember what life was like before technology and social media? Dust off your old board games and invite your friends over. Challenge them to play phone stack where you and your friends will stack your cell phones on top of each other. The first person to pick up their phone from the stack has to do a dare. Then, enjoy playing classic and strategic board games – it may even take longer than the hour!
Lie out in a park or pitch a tent in your backyard
Use the hour to disconnect and look up at the stars. Walk over to a park and watch the universe unfold above you. It’s amazing what quiet reflection can do. You might even discover a brilliantly creative idea for the next start-up company.
It’s nap time!
Not a fan of the darkness? Set your alarm and take a quick snooze. This is the perfect moment for you to take a nap and do good at the same time.
After the hour:
Hopefully at this point, you’ve lost track of time and are still playing board games, reflecting under the stars, or having in-depth and thought-provoking conversations with your friends.
Wasn’t it nice to unwind on a Saturday night?
Now mark your calendars for Earth Day Friday, April 22!
